Program Description: Pathways in Psychology: Finding Your Career Specialty
We will feature a panel of psychologists from different areas of the psychology profession. Some career areas included will be private practice, university counseling centers, hospital settings, and mental health centers. The panelists will discuss and respond to questions about their graduate school experiences, what led them to their current career, and what a typical workday is like for them.
The event is focused on doctoral students, especially those who are still early in their graduate school journey. Our hope is that the personal information provided by our panelists will be helpful to students in deciding what area of psychology they would like to pursue for their career. In addition, students can learn what types of clinical and other career experiences they might pursue to reach their goals!

Sydney Majka, B.A. is currently a third-year doctoral student in Ball State University's Counseling Psychology Ph.D program, and serves as the chair of the IPA Student Committee. Sydney completed a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ball State University in 2023, and her undergraduate degree in Psychology at DePauw University in 2021. Currently, Sydney 's research and clinical interests are focused on neurodiverse populations. Outside of the classroom, Sydney enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, baking, and watersports.

Co-Moderator: Anna Merill PhD, HSPP
Dr. Anna Merrill is a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor in the School Psychology Program at Indiana University - Bloomington and the Clinical Training Director of the Learning and Developmental Evaluation Clinic. She is a licensed psychologist and has worked in clinical practice in school, hospital, and private practice settings in Indiana and Massachusetts. She is the faculty liaison for the student committee for the Indiana Psychological Association.
Dr. Anna Merrill
Panelists:
Elesia Hines, PsyD, HSPP, ECMH-E®, PMH-C is a licensed clinical psychologist in the Division of Developmental Medicine at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. She is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine and a faculty member in the Indiana LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) program. Dr. Hines is endorsed as an Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist through the Alliance for the Advancement of Infant Mental Health and has a certification in perinatal mental health through Postpartum Support International. Her clinical and research interests include infant/early childhood mental health, perinatal mental health, early childhood trauma, neurodevelopmental disabilities, and supporting children in foster care. She provides outpatient diagnostic consultations and psychological evaluations for children ages 0-5, and she supervises graduate-level and postdoctoral psychology trainees. Dr. Hines also provides mental health support for caregivers whose babies are hospitalized in the Riley Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and families who are enrolled in the Riley Early Years Program (NICU follow-up program).
Dr. Elesia Hines
Emily Roth, PsyD, HSPP is a licensed clinical psychologist at CRG (Children’s Resource Group) in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Roth earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Spalding University before starting her career at Indiana University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry within their autism treatment center. She specializes in the evaluation and treatment of individuals across the lifespan with neurodevelopmental, emotional, and behavioral differences, including autism spectrum disorder, intellectual and developmental disabilities, ADHD, anxiety, mood disorders, and complex comorbidities. Dr. Roth conducts comprehensive psychological and educational evaluations and is passionate about neurodiversity-affirming assessment and intervention practices that help individuals and families better understand strengths, needs, and identity. Dr. Roth is currently IPA’s CE Chair and President Elect and will begin her Presidential term in January 2026.
Dr. Emily Roth
Keith Magnus, PhD, HSPP is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Indiana. He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Rochester. He started his career in college counseling at Butler University and is currently the Director of their clinic and Training Director for their APA-accredited doctoral internship program. As Director, he sets policy for the clinic, oversees staff, provides supervision and training to master’s and doctoral level trainees, and provides direct clinical services to Butler students. Prior to working at Butler, Dr. Magnus worked in community mental health, and he maintains a private practice outside of his work at Butler. He is interested in mentoring and professional development. His clinical areas of interest include suicide prevention, grief/loss, identity development, and acceptance-based approaches to care. He has been a member of the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies for 25 years and an Executive Board member for the past three years.
