Hello IPA Membership!
I hope this NEWSletter reaches you all well. For me, this month has started out with a lot of excitement, including running into fellow IPAers enjoying the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestras Tchaikovsky concert and witnessing the total solar eclipse on April 8th!
This month, for our Member Spotlight, we are featuring Dr. Jim Schroeder. Dr. Schroeder has been an active member and contributor on IPA's CE Committee since 2008. Over the years, he has inspired many of us through his writings, presentations, and thought-provoking conversations! It is a privilege for us in IPA to highlight his contribution to our organization this month. Please take the time to read the feature and feel invited to outreach him directly with your support and congratulations on his newest publication!
If not sooner, I hope to "see" you all for our upcoming Spring Ethics Event: The Trust Sequence XIV: Ethics and Risk Management of Navigating New Frontiers in Psychological Practice on Friday, May 10th! Be sure to review the upcoming lineup of Continuing Education opportunities - there are many great programs offered! Along those lines, IPA has opened the Call for Proposals for the IPA 2024 Fall Conference - we would love to review your proposal and hopefully showcase you in November!
Warmly, Gili Goldfrad, PsyD, HSPP – IPA President 2024

| Member Spotlight In this section of our NEWSletter we will highlight some of our IPA leadership as well as provide updates on our IPA committee activities throughout the year. This month we feature long-time contributing IPA Continuing Education (CE) Committee member James F. Schroeder, PhD, HSPP.
James F. Schroeder, PhD, HSPP Jim, you've been a committed member of IPA, and although many may know you, I'd like to start with an "introduction." Would you share a bit with the membership about the personal and professional you?
Although I was born in Indianapolis, my wife, Amy, and I grew up a few miles apart in Evansville, Indiana. Shortly after getting married in 2000 and finishing my undergraduate at Ball State, I started graduate school at Saint Louis University, from where I completed a PhD in clinical psychology in 2005. My internship was at Kosair Children's Hospital/University Louisville School of Medicine, and I completed a fellowship at Saint Louis Children's Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine. After our first three kids were born, we made the decision to move back to Evansville in 2008, where I started at St. Mary's Center for Children until transitioning to Easterseals Rehabilitation Center in 2018, where I am now the Vice President of the Department of Psychology & Wellness and the Training Director of our pre-doctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship. Along the way, our family continued to grow, and Amy and I are now blessed to have eight children between the ages of 17 and 4. Life can certainly be intense and humbling at times (especially as a pediatric psychologist) but it's amazing sharing our home with eight kids who are constantly growing and teaching us about what matters most. Along the way, I also found joy in writing, having recently published my sixth book, and also in distance running and triathlons, where the hard-earned, but much appreciated contemplative silence is something that gives me great peace.
Please share with us what brought you to become a member of Indiana State Association in 2008, and what you've found most rewarding during your time with IPA?
IPA has been a blessing in my life since I first joined in 2008. Shortly after joining, I was asked to be part of the CE Committee, which I remain today. It's been such a wonderful experience being on this committee, as it opened my eyes to the passionate service that goes on throughout the state (and country) in supporting psychologists who strive to care for others. Along the way, I have been fortunate to give a number of talks for the IPA Fall Conference and monthly webinars, often focused on everyday topics like sleep, movement, holistic care, time-honored and well-researched interventions (like forgiveness and gratitude), and even doing a fun "debate" of sorts on prescription privileges years ago. Each opportunity reminds me that although we all come from different experiences and backgrounds, we also share so many commonalities, both in everyday life and what we are striving for. Some of my most fun moments have also been connecting with other IPA members on just life, and both the challenges and triumphs it brings. No doubt I am indebted to IPA for more than I could ever express!
Share with us about your recent exciting publication news! Please tell us about the collaborative creation of Turning Free Will Into Willpower: The Opportunity of a Lifetime.
I recently co-authored the above-mentioned book with Vanessa Jodlowski (also an IPA member), which in some ways has been a decades-long (+) project in the making. Early on in raising our kids, I realized that other than loving them unconditionally, there was nothing more important than teaching and motivating them to think and act in ways that strove for health, harmony, contentment, and sacredness in their lives. I also realized that there are three primary ways that all of us learn how to do this: 1) experiences/directives of self & others (including those we "know" from afar), 2) scientific findings, and 3) religion/spirituality. But as I got deeper into this, I realized that there wasn't really a resource that synthesized these three areas of wisdom/understanding in an accessible, practical way for people of many different backgrounds, experiences, and resources. And so this became the book, and we are really excited about the opportunities for positive impact with it. We also believe that in the midst of our current pediatric mental health crisis, this book provides multiple frameworks and ideas to empower people (especially parents) to improve mental health in their own homes and be proactive in reducing risks in areas that are malleable. The book is available on Amazon with my other publications.
