Neuropsychological Considerations in Treatment It is very common for patients in psychotherapeutic treatment to complain about problems with cognition, such as memory, attention, or word finding difficulties. Many therapists are aware that behavioral health disorders can impact cognition, but it can be difficult for a therapist to know when a patient’s concerns may represent a separate neurological disorder. This webinar will discuss cognition in the context of behavioral health disorders to help therapists more confidently determine when their patients are the “worried well” vs when a referral for neuropsychological assessment or treatment with a neurologist would be indicated. Using the basic framework of the biopsychosocial model, attendees will learn about the basic neuroanatomy of the frontal lobes and limbic system and how behavioral health disorders disrupt the functioning of that system to impact cognition. By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to recognize behavioral signs and demographic variables that predict functional cognitive impairment (e.g., the “worried well”) vs. dementia or other neurological causes of cognitive dysfunction. We will discuss how to assess for a history of neurological events that may warrant referral for further cognitive assessment.
Learning Objectives By completing this program, participants will able to:
1. Summarize how behavioral health disorders impact cognition using a biopsychosocial model
2. Describe major cognitive domains and which domains are likely to be impacted by behavioral health disorders
3. Recognize when referral for a neuropsychological evaluation or neurological treatment would be beneficial
4. Recognize which neurological events are likely to impact cognition and emotional functioning due to acquired brain injury
Presenter: Elizabeth Andresen, PhD, HSPP Dr. Andresen performs neuropsychological evaluations for patients with a variety of neurological, genetic, medical, developmental, and behavioral health conditions. She works with patients across the lifespan (infants and toddlers through end of life). Dr. Andresen strives to identify each patient’s individual strengths and weaknesses in order to provide appropriate referrals, resources, and practical recommendations to help patients and their families function more effectively in daily life.
