Evaluating Cognition in Children with Complex Medical Conditions
A number of complex medical conditions can arise in childhood that affect brain development, alter skill trajectories, and shape child-caregiver and child-peer relationships. The overall impact a medical condition will have on a child’s functioning depends on illness-related medical factors, psychosocial factors, and the interaction between the two. When conducted with a pediatric population, neuropsychological evaluation can identify a child’s unique cognitive, emotional, and behavioral profile, highlighting the influence of a significant medical condition on functioning. Neuropsychological research and clinical practice has identified several “classic” profiles associated with common childhood medical disorders. This presentation will review the purpose of neuropsychological evaluation with pediatric populations, identify cognitive processes that are typically affected in common medical conditions, and discuss implications for working with children who have cognitive limitations associated with a medical condition.

Learning Objectives
By completing this program, participants will able to:
1.    Identify the impact of medical disease processes on cognitive development in childhood.
2.    Identify "classic" cognitive outcomes associated with common childhood medical conditions.
3.    Identify appropriate considerations for working with children who have illness-related cognitive difficulties.
