Assessment & Treatment of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders
Research indicates the incidence of mental health conditions in the pregnancy and postpartum period can range from 12-25% and include symptoms of depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, psychosis, mania, as well as impact parents of all genders and family compositions. Although perinatal mood and anxiety disorders impact parents cross-culturally, data suggest women in lower income countries as well as women from underrepresented groups can experience increased rates of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (Woody et al, 2017). This webinar will provide an overview of mental health assessment and treatment considerations when working with patients in the perinatal period, from pre-conception through one year post-partum.
Learning Objectives
By completing this program, participants will able to:
1. Identify 3 additional areas of inquiry to utilize in the assessment of PMADs.
2. List 3 ways systemic racism influences poorer perinatal health outcomes for people of color.
3. Describe 3 factors that increase the risk of experiencing a PMAD.
4. Identify 3 myths associated with depression in new mothers.
Presenter Bio: Maria P. Hanzlik, PsyD, HSPP
Dr. Maria Hanzlik completed her masters and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Chicago Campus. She initially obtained training in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders while in her graduate school programming, completing a mental health rotation in the outpatient OB/GYN clinic, as part of an interdisciplinary team, at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. She completed her initial Postpartum Support International (PSI) perinatal mood and anxiety disorders training at that time, and received updated introductory and advanced PSI training as a licensed psychologist. She has presented on the intersection of addressing sexual concerns in the perinatal period for a local doula agency, and has presented professionally on addressing sexuality in the perinatal period as part of The Chicago School’s Continuing Education Series in 2017 as well as presenting at the American Psychological Association’s 2019 Annual Convention as part of the Division 35 (Women in Psychology) programming. Dr. Hanzlik commonly works with women and their partners presenting with mental health concerns during pregnancy and post-partum as well as patients looking to address the effects of infertility, miscarriage, and pregnancy loss.

Dr. Hanzlik and IPA have not received any commercial support for this program or its contents and will not receive any commercial support prior to or during this program.
CE certificates will be distributed via email withing two weeks post-event.
