Program Description:  Mental Health Considerations for Youth Experiencing Family Disruptions
This presentation provides a framework for understanding attachment theory and the developmental needs of children in the context of family disruptions. Types and consequences of family disruption will be reviewed, with a focus on the causes and consequences of foster placement disruption. More broadly, the presentation will also cover symptoms of traumatic stress across development, criteria for diagnosis of traumatic stress disorders, assessing traumatic stress in youth, and providing mental health treatment to youth experiencing traumatic stress due to family disruptions. 
   
Learning Objectives
By completing this program, participants will able to:

  1. Summarize the impact of family disruption within a developmental framework
  2. Identify contributors to and consequences of foster placement instability and describe how cultural and diversity characteristics affect placement stability and outcomes
  3. Analyze your role in the treatment of mental health symptoms related to family disruptions
     
Presenter Bio: Elana Abelson, PhD
Elana Abelson, PhD (she/her) is a postdoctoral fellow in clinical child and adolescent psychology at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). She received her PhD from the University of Cincinnati and completed her doctoral internship at IUSM on the child/pediatric track. Currently, Dr. Abelson works with youth ages 2–17 and their families to address concerns related to trauma, anxiety, depression, and disruptive behaviors. She also delivers evidence-based PTSD interventions to individuals with a history of perinatal trauma. Following completion of her fellowship, Dr. Abelson plans to continue providing evidence-based intervention and assessment services to youth and their families, with a focus on early childhood and parent training.

Please note that APA rules require that credit be given only to those who attend the entire workshop. Those arriving more than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time or leaving early will not receive CE credits. Partial credit cannot be given. We ask that all participants return the post-program evaluation form at the conclusion of the program. Dr. Abelson and IPA have not received any commercial support for this program or its contents and will not receive any commercial support prior to or during this program.
 
CE certificates will be distributed via email withing two weeks post-event.
