Treating Adolescent Self-Harm and Suicidal Behavior with Dialectical Behavior Therapy
This webinar will cover treatment interventions for adolescents engaged in non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal behavior. Webinar participants will be given an in depth look at Adolescent Dialectical Behavior Therapy, an evidenced-based treatment approach. The differences from how Adolescent DBT differs from Adult Standard DBT will be explained as well as how it can be helpful for working with adolescents who engage in self-harm and suicidal behavior. Participants will also be given an introduction to the Adolescent DBT skills training modules and instructed on ways they can incorporate these into their clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
By completing this program, participants will able to:
describe how clinicians from a Dialectical Behavior Therapy perspective view the function or cause of non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal behavior and how DBT targets these.
summarize the main components of Adolescent DBT and state how it is the same and how it differs from Adult Standard DBT.
describe the five Adolescent Skills Training modules and a few specific skills from each.
describe specific ways they can incorporate Adolescent DBT skills into their own clinical practice.
Presenter: Melissa Butler, Ph.D.
Melissa Butler, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). Dr. Butler specializes in working with high-risk populations of children and adolescents, including those who are suicidal or engage in self-harm behavior and those who have serious mental illnesses or significant behavioral issues. She has done so across a variety of settings including in a state hospital, an acute inpatient unit, a traditional outpatient clinic, a primary care clinic, an adolescent juvenile correctional facility, and private practice. Dr. Butler currently works at Riley Hospital for Children providing inpatient and outpatient services. She is also an Assistant Training Director for the IUSM Pre-Doctoral Psychology Internship program. Dr. Butler has held several leadership positions within the Indiana Psychological Association including President, Continuing Education Committee Chair, and Fall Conference Chair. In her personal life, Dr. Butler is married and has two children and enjoys reading, playing board games, and traveling.
