PTSD at the End of Life
This presentation provides an overview of PTSD and how it potentially alters a patient’s ability to engage with treatment and affects clinical approaches of clinicians at the end of life. It describes a framework to provide patient-centered care to maximize care coordination and patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives
By completing this program, participants will able to:

1.  recognize how trauma impacts Veterans at the end of life
2.  describe treatment options for PTSD specific to the end of life
3.  utilize Trauma Informed Care

Presenter:  Jeffrey D. Lightfoot, Ph.D., HSPP
Dr. Lightfoot is a clinical psychologist with Veteran’s Health Indiana, practicing at the VA Medical Center.  He specializes in palliative and hospice care and provides services to Veterans, their families and caregivers as part of an interdisciplinary team that serves the hospital and community through inpatient and outpatient consultation, and coordination with external care facilities and hospice providers.  Dr. Lightfoot previously served as part of the PTSD Clinical Team at the VA and carried this interest forward into his work in the palliative and hospice care setting. In palliative care, multi-professional teams work to improve and maintain the quality of life of terminally ill patients and their families. In this field, clinical psychologists take on a broad range of tasks that range from preventive and supportive to psychotherapeutic work. A history of trauma can be a significant determinant in the course and success of that work.
