Presentation Description:
In human service professions, knowledge of a phenomena, theory, or intervention is not sufficient for effective and ethical practice that improves the human condition. Similarly, educational approaches that focus primarily on knowledge acquisition will ill-prepare learners for functioning capably in the human service field. Experiential learning, defined simply as learning through action, is a bridge between what one knows and how one applies what they know (Askeland, 2003). For undergraduate students preparing for human service professions, experiential learning can promote the development of reflexivity, clinical judgment, helping skills, and other professional helping competencies (e.g., empathy). This presentation details a classroom-based simulation activity designed to facilitate students’ exposure to the helping process, application of case management skills, and practice of professional documentation. The advantages and limitations of this simulation activity will be explored and lessons learned in implementation will be shared. 

Learning Objectives:
1.           Recognize the significance of experiential learning in preparing undergraduate students for helping professions
2.           Describe how a classroom-based simulation can facilitate undergraduate students' case management knowledge and skills
3.           Explore advantages and limitations of classroom-based experiential learning simulation

Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Natasha Watkins is a clinical assistant professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Purdue University. She completed her graduate training in clinical-community psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Watkins’s research and teaching are guided by a broad interest in understanding and improving the capacity of social settings to promote college students’ positive social development. Dr. Watkins teaches content and practical skills courses in the area of human services and jointly coordinates the HDFS department’s capstone internship program. She has several years of experience coordinating and supervising college students’ experiential learning.

·         All licensees requesting Category I CE credits will receive a certificate from IPA confirming the number of credits earned. These certificates will be delivered via email approximately 2-6 weeks after the conference.
