Providing Affirming Mental Health Care for LGBTQ+ Youth
LGBTQ+ youth experience significant mental health disparities relative to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. However, evidence-based interventions designed to address these disparities are lacking. In this webinar, we will discuss strategies for addressing the mental health needs of LGBTQ+ youth, from creating a more welcoming clinical environment to adapting existing evidence-based treatment to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ youth, with a focus on transgender and gender-diverse youth and their families.
Learning Objectives
By completing this program, participants will able to:
1. Summarize the major mental health disparities experienced by LGBTQ+ youth and the contributing role of minority stress.
2. List practical steps that can be taken to create a welcoming clinical environment for LGBTQ+ youth and their families.
3. Explain the use of a case-formulation approach for addressing mental health concerns experienced by gender-diverse youth that integrates cognitive-behavioral interventions with a minority stress framework.
Presenter Bio: Kelly Donahue, PhD, HSPP
Dr. Donahue is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine and licensed clinical psychologist. She completed her doctorate at Indiana University-Bloomington, internship at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and postdoctoral fellowship in adolescent medicine at the IU School of Medicine. She serves as the co-director of Riley Hospital for Children's Gender Health Program. She provides psychological services and support for gender-diverse children, adolescents, and young adults; treatment for depression and anxiety in adolescents; and management of psychosocial challenges among patients with diabetes, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, differences of sex development (DSD), and other health concerns. She supervises psychology trainees in the areas of gender health and evidence-based interventions for adolescents. She is also the founding co-chair of the Society of Pediatric Psychology’s Gender Health Special Interest Group.
