Immediacy at the Intersection of Impulse Control Disorders and Pandemics
As the name of this psychiatric disorder implies, Impulse-control disorder (ICD) is characterized by impulsivity--the failure to resist an urge, an impulse, or a temptation to engage in certain behaviors that are excessive and/or harmful to the person or to others.

Impulse behavior, unlike compulsions in obsessive-compulsive disorder, possess a pleasurable quality. Individuals might look forward to the time they will engage in such behaviors as gambling or shoplifting. And they may experience an urge or craving state before engaging in the behavior, similar to people with substance use disorders before drinking alcohol or using drugs. In addition, as does drinking in the case of alcohol use disorder, the impulse behavior decreases the individual’s anxiety. Like people with substance use disorders, many individuals with impulse control disorders have difficulties delaying or inhibiting their impulses.

Life during a pandemic requires careful and thoughtful behaviors based on decisions that have been made in constant awareness of possible and probable consequences. Pandemics exacerbate the condition of ICD. In ICDs, the time factor is one of immediacy; relief of tension or achievement of pleasure have to occur immediately. For individuals suffering from ICDs, the goal is pleasure or relief of tension. During pandemics, the time factor is uncertainty; it is unknown when it will be over, and the goal is to remain symptom-free, which requires caution. This constellation severely impacts the lives of people with an ICD and the therapeutic framework they might be involved in.

Learning Objectives
By completing this program, participants will able to:
1.  Utilize the connection of immediacy to impulse control disorders
2.  Recognize the importance of consequences in matters of choice
3.  Apply/establish a positive balance between the time concepts of now and later
