Program Description:   The Neuropsychology of the Bilingual Hispanic Patient: Theory, Challenges, and Practice Considerations
This webinar will provide a description from literature n theories of bilingualism, summarizing its neuroanatomical correlates and review of the evidence towards a bilingual "advantage." The webinar will also describe effects from bilingualism and acculturation on neuropsychological performance and some of the challenges pertinetn in the work with the multicultural patient. Finally, practical recommendations will be offered to maximize the provision of competent neuropsychological services and care.

  2. summarize the effect of acculturalization and bilingualism on neuropsychological performance.
  3. list some of the challenges associated with the evaluation of the multicultural patient.
Presenter bio:  Patricia Garcia, PsyD, HSPP
Dr. Garcia is a Clinical Neuropsychologist and Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Indiana University School of Medicine. Clinically, Dr. Garcia evaluates a variety of adult patient populations who present with neurodegenerative diseases and acquired brain injury affecting cognition, behavior, and personality. Her research interests include cognitive aging and neuropsychiatric sequelae after a brain injury, cultural adaptations to psychological evidence-based interventions, and the science of recruitment and retention of understudied groups in clinical research. She obtained her doctorate degree from Albizu University-Miami campus, completing internship and fellowship training in neuropsychology at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital with a focus on the neurocognitive assessment of clinical, multicultural populations. Dr. Garcia currently serves as the chair of Culture and Diversity Task Force in Traumatic Brain Injury from the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine; is the chair of the Conflict of Interest Committee with the National Academy of Neuropsychology, faculty with the Outreach Recruitment and Engagement (OREC) core of the Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (IADRDC); and co-leads the Hispanic Community Advisory Board for OREC that looks to promote brain health education and increase participation of understudied populations in ADRD biomarker clinical trials.

CE certificates will be distributed via email within two weeks after a passing test (75+%) is submitted.
