What Every Counselor Needs to Know About Youth Firesetting
Although frequently a dismissed or ignored behavior, juvenile fire setting incidents cause 860 civilian injuries and nearly $235 million in property damage annually (NFPA, 2022). The current presentation addresses why every mental health professional needs to consider including questions about fire behavior in their assessment strategies. Participants will examine information on youth firesetting, the etiology of the behaviors, and how to provide preventative and intervention services.

Learning Objectives
By completing this program, participants will able to:
1. summarize the etiology of youth firesetting behaviors.
2. examine how developmental factors influence youth firesetting behaviors.
3. explore intervention and prevention strategies to reduce recidivism.
4. explore community resources that can support working with youth firesetters.
