President's Greeting

Dr. Courtney Johnson

Hello IPA colleagues! I am excited to step into the role of IPA President for 2023! We have such a talented group of psychologists (and soon-to-be psychologists) throughout the state. My goal is to support the ongoing efforts of our IPA committees and continue to facilitate networking with each other via CE opportunities, resource sharing, referrals/consultations, with collegial support and encouragement through IPA.

I am thrilled to work with our Executive Director, Dick Rhoad and our Director of Operations, Connie Vore. We are fortunate to have a strong IPA Board including the following members:

  • President Elect = Gili Goldfrad
  • Past President & APA Council Representative = Jill Fodstad
  • Treasurer = Pam Reed
  • Secretary = Liz Begyn
  • Continuing Education Committee Chair = Emily Roth
  • Diversity Committee Co-Chairs = Danielle Henderson & Stephanie Cunningham
  • Government Affairs Committee Chair and Federal Advocacy Coordinator = April Krowel
  • Student Committee Chair = Alexis Pandelios

For more information about our IPA committees, please see our website at: https://www.memberleap.com/members/projects_view.php?org_id=INPA.

Thank you for your involvement in IPA and please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly with any requests or feedback: courtney@johnsonneuropsychology.com.

IPA Ethics Consultation Service

IPA Members may request consultation with the IPA Ethics Consultation Service (ECS) Team. ECS defines an ethical dilemma in psychology as a problem involving a difficult choice regarding the principles of conduct governing psychologists. Conflicts between values are the at heart of ethical dilemmas.

The Ethics Consultation Service (ECS) is a confidential peer-lead resource for IPA members. ECS will help members identify, analyze, and resolve ethical questions or dilemmas which provide continuing education experiences.

Methods of ECS
The ECS consists of licensed psychologists who work in the state of Indiana. The ECS team are unpaid volunteers whose aim is to provide a helpful service to IPA psychologists.

The ECS has committed to following the National Center for Ethics in Health Care's model of ethics consultation by using the CASES approach. The five steps of the CASES approach will be utilized to respond to all consultation requests.

ECS provides:

  • Peer consultation
  • A lead consultant
  • Committee-based analysis and result following the CASES approach

ECS does not provide:

  • Legal advice or counsel
  • Any substitute for legal advice or the advice of malpractice insurers
  • Malpractice insurance or coverage of any kind
  • Protection from legal proceedings, licensing board complaints, or any other legal, licensing, administrative, or investigative processes to which a psychologist may be subject.

If you would like to consult with our IPA Ethics Consultation Service, go to the Member’s section of our website at:
Ethics Consultation Service - ECS - Indiana Psychological Association (indianapsychology.org).

Member Spotlight

In this section of our NEWSletter for 2023, we will highlight some of our IPA leadership as well as provide updates on our IPA committee activities throughout the year.

So, as our first Highlight for 2023, we thought it most appropriate to highlight our new President for 2023, Courtney Johnson.

When did you join IPA?

I have been a member of IPA since 2011 when I joined as a Student Member. I first worked with IPA on the Fall Conference committee as a member from 2013-2017 and then co-chaired the Fall Conference Committee from 2017-2019. I joined the Ethics Committee in 2020 and remain a member.

What is your educational background?

I am originally from Ohio, where I earned my BA in psychology from Cedarville University. I moved to Indiana for graduate school in 2008 and earned my PhD from IUPUI in 2013. I returned to Ohio for my internship at Cincinnati VAMC and then returned to Indiana for fellowship in adult neuropsychology at IU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry in 2013, completing in 2015. I had previously been a practicum student at IUSM. I was fortunate enough to stay on as faculty in the department alongside my mentors until early 2020. I obtained board certification (ABPP) in clinical neuropsychology in 2019.

Where are you practicing today?

I never thought I would leave IU, but then COVID-19 happened, and I decided to try out private practice! I am now in solo private practice in Plainfield, IN (Johnson Neuropsychology) where I focus primarily on providing evaluations and treatment related to worker’s compensation claims and working with adults with somatoform conditions.

Why are you involved with IPA?

I became involved in IPA because one of my mentors at IU encouraged me to do so to serve the profession. I am pretty sure he has said this to every resident class during their fellowship orientation. I had a mentor through IPA as well (back when that was offered for trainees) and that was an invaluable resource for me. Now that I am in private practice, being involved in IPA has become even more important to me. I remain connected with colleagues, and I stay up to date on changes within the field.
